Spray dryers can be fabricated for various capacity (from a few pounds per hour to more than 100 tons per hour). Another advantage of designing this system is the ability to perfectly control it automatically, which allows continuous evaluation and reporting of various types of process parameters simultaneously. Therefore, an appropriate design can be selected to provide a product with the desired characteristics. The quality of the product remains constant during drying and the particles are almost spherical and often hollow, which leads to a reduction in the bulk density of the product. Recently, spray drying has been considered for encapsulation of pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs in various carriers. This method can also be used to produce pure medicinal powders.
